There can be a multitude of reasons why your dog bites, scratches, or has skin problems. Toxins/chemicals can be found in our environment and in processed foods which can have a detrimental effect on our dogs skin. Most processed dog foods contain very little essential fatty acids (omega -3) which is essential in every dog's diet and a lack of this will cause skin & coat problems. Allergies or sensitivities are the result of your dog’s immune system over-reacting, which means that there is something going on that their body does not like and it is critical to get to the root of the problem. Check for bacterial & fungal (yeast) infections, parasites or sensitivities to different pollens or other environmental allergen. Some skin problems can be the result of digestive dysfunction so ensure that your dog’s diet is species appropriate and that their gut is healthy and strong. As with any sensitivity, it is important to find the trigger and avoid or eliminate it, whether environmental or food. In some cases, such as house dust mites, this avoidance may be impossible. Medication is sometimes necessary to help but not a long term solution as it can cause other health problems. Your dog may be experiencing other skin or coat issues which aren't the result of a sensitivity. It may be that your dog moults excessively, struggles to regain their coat after shedding or has lost their colour pigment over time.
